Animal escapes, Tyke the elephant and going green
(If you find this post informative, you might like to check out these.)
TYKE
Stateside, it is August 20th. 13 years ago today, on the streets of Honolulu, an elephant was pumped full of bullets for snapping mentally. For resisting the daily grind of beatings, training, performing, and enduring the pain in her feet and body, she was shot 87 times.
That elephant is Tyke. Because of Tyke, Honolulu no longer allows travelling circus performance. And I believe Tyke has influenced our very staid AVA to ban travelling circuses from Singapore too. Under Licensing Requirements for Animal Exhibits:
(Note: This still does not ban circuses, and so I can see circuses coming back into vogue when the vaulted Integrated Resorts or IRs are up.)
Please remember Tyke. She is only one among a population of elephants exploited for human pleasure and profit. Light a candle in her memory here, and remember all the potential Tykes out there still languishing for reprieve. Just double-click on any unlit candle and follow the instructions accordingly.
ANIMAL ESCAPES
Tyke is, or was, a wild creature. So it may go to reason that she would “go berserk”, though I wager even a man or a woman would if made to endure what she has endured for most of her life. And yet, animal escapes are not rare occurrences. Google “Animal Escapes” and you get a list that run the gamut from captive zoo exhibits, to bored pet dogs… and even run-of-the-mill pigs and cows slated for slaughter.
This article, published in April this year, recounts a number of “livestock” who became named individuals because they successfully escaped the butcher knife, and were allowed to live out their lives naturally. As you read it and feel yourself smiling and cheering for these fortunate few, ask yourself: “Did all the others, the millions and billions* who are slaughtered deserve any less?”
While thinking about your reactions to animal escapees and the ones who lost their lives for our taste buds, why not consider reducing your meat consumption? If nothing else, it’s eco to do so, and you don’t want to be blamed for literally eating up the Earth’s ravaged resources, do you?
THE MILLIONS AND BILLIONS UNESCAPED ANIMALS
(*) For substantiation on the “millions and billions”, check out places like the following. You can google “Meat Consumption”
You do the math.
Other references (google “meat + environment” for more)
