As planned, btmao and I went looking for Carlie at 7.30pm last night. We went up and down levels 2 to 4 as she didn’t seem to be anywhere. btmao also stoppered the doorways on levels 2 and 3 to facilitate our plan. There were no new poo piles, for which we were thankful.
And as before, after a few rounds of futile calling, and just when we were about to give up, she appeared.
Carlie. (No new pictures as I didn’t want to use the flash.)
She reacted immediately to the schtinky “premium tuna and shrimp” but refused to approach although she meowed beseechingly. We had planned to let btmao do the luring, to get Carlie used to her as well, but the sight of 2 persons seem too much for her to handle. So btmao had to sneak around and finally stay away from sight.
So she and I did our little dollop-line dance – two steps forward, one step back. From the 3rd floor, she slowly followed the dollops I doled out to the ground floor, and she even made a tentative venture out the 2nd floor doorway before I finally managed to coax her to resume the descent. We were making good progress compared to the morning.
But right there, she regressed, and after licking up the dollops, scooted right back up. Luckily, she stopped at the second floor. Again, I slowly lured downstairs, and this time she stayed to finish the food. But by this time, there was barely anything left in the can, and I dished out the balance on the ground for her. There was no time to lay out a proper dish, as the food bag was behind me, where btmao had placed it. I did not want Carlie scooting back up again.
My confidence in her was not displaced, she cleaned up the food thoroughly, leaving only a few saliva patches. But as I was positioned right in the way of her usual escape after eating, she scooted back up.
Remembering the impromptu doorstops we made, my heart sank at the thought that she would get back up to the 3rd floor. I snuck a peek ad saw her staring at me mid-flight to the 2nd floor. Then as calmly as I could, I indicated to btmao to go up by the other way and remove the stopon the 3rd floor while I tried to delay her ascent.
Carlie slowly crept back upstairs, but exited at the 2nd floor, and seemed content and relaxed to be there. She proceeded grooming. I stayed on the stairway until I heard the 3rd floor door creaking shut.
Relieved, I left her there and met up with btmao. We then went home. It took half an hour to get Carlie down. We hoped she would stay .
Her behaviour aligned with our theory, we felt, that she was either confused or scared to get down from the 3rd floor to eliminate on the grass after that event.
This morning, after a small disruption by Cara, I went checking on all levels and found no more poo piles or other signs of fouling.
Carlie was under a car… on the second level. Tonight, we’ll get her to eat alfresco again.
